Los Angeles Moving Day: Parking, Elevators, COIs and Building Rules
In Los Angeles, the distance between two homes is only part of the moving plan. A truck that cannot park close to the entrance, an unavailable elevator or a missing building document can add more time than the drive itself. A little access planning can make moving day much easier.
Start with both buildings
Contact the property manager, leasing office or HOA at the pickup and delivery locations. Ask about moving hours, elevator reservations, loading docks, gate codes, protective floor coverings and whether the building requires advance notice.
Certificate of insurance requirements
Some managed buildings require a certificate of insurance, commonly called a COI, before a moving company can enter the property. Ask management for its exact requirements and send them to your mover early. Requirements can include specific certificate-holder wording or additional-insured language.
Reserve the service elevator
High-rise and larger apartment buildings may limit moving to certain hours. Reserve the elevator for enough time to load or unload. If the elevator is shared with residents or another move, the crew may spend significant time waiting.
Walk the truck route
Look at the street and building entrance from a truck driver’s perspective. Check overhead clearance, tight turns, steep driveways, alleys, gates and low branches. Identify the closest practical loading point and tell the moving company about anything unusual.
Read every parking sign
Los Angeles streets can have street-sweeping restrictions, permit zones, meters, loading rules and time limits. Rules can vary from one block to the next. If you need a temporary parking arrangement, research it well before moving day rather than assuming an open curb will be available.
Measure difficult furniture paths
Measure doorways, stair turns, elevators and oversized furniture. A sofa that fit into a home years ago may have been delivered before a railing or door was installed. Measurements help identify items that may need disassembly.
Prepare the building before the crew arrives
Clear hallways, remove small obstacles, reserve parking if permitted and keep pets safely separated from the work area. Have keys, fobs and gate codes ready. If your building requires padding inside the elevator, confirm who provides it.
