Moving Out of a Los Angeles Apartment: Complete Checklist
Apartment moves in Los Angeles reward preparation. Building schedules, parking and elevator access can be just as important as packing. Use this checklist to reduce last-minute problems.
Four to eight weeks before the move
- Review your lease and move-out notice requirements.
- Choose a moving date and request estimates.
- Ask both buildings about moving hours, elevators and COI requirements.
- Start donating, selling or disposing of items you do not want to move.
- Create a simple room-by-room inventory.
Two to four weeks before
- Reserve elevators and loading areas where required.
- Confirm parking rules at both addresses.
- Arrange utility transfers and address changes.
- Pack seasonal items, books, decor and other nonessentials.
- Measure large furniture and doorways.
One week before
- Confirm the date, arrival window and contact information with the mover.
- Finish most packing and label boxes by room.
- Separate valuables, documents and medication that will stay with you.
- Photograph furniture and electronics.
- Prepare a box with chargers, toiletries, clothing, basic kitchen items and anything needed the first night.
The day before
Charge your phone, clear hallways, empty and defrost appliances if needed, secure pets and make sure keys, gate remotes and elevator reservations are ready.
Moving day
Walk through the apartment before loading begins and point out anything fragile or unusual. At the destination, direct boxes to the correct rooms so you do not have to move them twice. Before leaving the old apartment, check cabinets, closets, balconies and storage spaces.
After the truck leaves
Take move-out photos, return keys according to your lease and keep copies of relevant documents. At the new home, unpack the essentials first and inspect items as you settle in.
